“Iesous Christos Theos Yios Sorter” These Greek works translate “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.” Breaking these words into initials we get “i-chth-y-s.” Put the initials together and the Greek word “ichthys” translates as “fish.”

The fish symbol was used by the early Christians as a way to identify themselves to each other. This symbol was especially helpful for the Christians during times of persecution. Many times the fish symbol would be etched in the dirt where people congregated in communities. This would let wandering Christians know that others of their faith were in the vicinity. As Christians today may we use this symbol to seek those with whom we can share our faith in Jesus Christ. As Jesus told his disciples:
